Whale Watching in Northern Peru
If you are a nature lover and would like to observe some of the most amazing marine fauna, head to northern Peru. There you will be able to relax and recharge your batteries to continue the journey.
Los Organos, located around 1200 km north of Lima, has a heavenly beach where you can surf and try local sea food. From August to October you can see Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), which arrive in Peruvian waters for breeding and calving.
Newly born whales are easily seen in a once-in-a-life-time experience, performing for the very first time next to their giant mothers, which can reach 12–16 metres (39–52 ft) long and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms (79,000 lb). Despite its size, these are acrobatic mammals known for slapping the water with their amazing tail and pectoral.
During the tour, you can also observe other fauna such as sea lions, sea turtles, dolphins. You can also observe sea birds like the blue footed booby and the magnificent frigate bird (also seen in Galapagos islands). For more information regarding the tour, please visit Pacifico Adventures.
After an unforgettable morning, head to Mancora beach (only 20 minutes away from Los Organos) to try some of the best Peruvian gastronomy. At La Sirena de Juan, its owner and chef Juan will delight you with fresh tuna and shrimp dishes. He also has unique varieties of Pisco Sour made with tamarin, mango and strawberry instead of the classic lemon.
But a special experience deserves a unique lodging, right? I recommend staying at Las cabañas de Antica, located in Vichayito (between Los Organos and Mancora). Here you can rent cozy bungalows in front of the Pacific Ocean where you will witness one of the best sunsets in South America. For more information, please visit their website.
For the whale watching tour, I recommend you bring:
- hat and sunscreen
- a bag to protect your camera from water
