Races Around the Country
Marathons in Colombia have become an important leisure and fitness activity. For globetrotters looking for good places to run and practice for marathons throughout the year, check out a complete calendar of sport activities you won’t want to miss. In Colombia, May, August and September are great months to find road races and other competitions. You can sign up as an individual or as a group for a chance to win prizes of up to 30.000.000 Colombian pesos (USD$17.000).
Every year in May, more than 1,900 women participate in Bogota’s Nosotras Corremos Nike 5K. This is a women’s only competition that takes place at the same time in cities such as Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Lima, Quito, Mexico City, Panama City, Seoul and Singapore. More than 30,000 runners participate each year by signing up at any Nike Store.
The Nike5K race goes through important landmarks in Bogota such as Carrera 15, Calle 100 and Carrera 11. There are three categories: Youth (16 to 18 years old), Open (19 to 45 years old), and Master (46 and up).
Half Marathon of Bogota
This marathon is certified as an IAAF Road Race because of the number of participants–including elite athletes—race infrastructure, and active participation of Bogota locals before, during and after the event.
This year, the half marathon will take place on July 29 in the capital city. There will be two distances: 10K and 21K. The cost to sign up for the Half Marathon of Bogota as an individual is 60.000 Colombian pesos (USD$30).
Corre Villa de Leyva
This race will take place in this wonderful municipality of the Boyaca Department. In October 2011, 464 participants ran 5K, 10K, and 20K races. This is also a great event for kids. Last year, children from 3 to 14 years old ran 50 and 400 meter races. This year the race will take place on August 26. Learn more about the Corre Villa de Leyva road race.
Maratón de las Flores Medellin
For the first time in 2012, the Medellin road race will include a 42K marathon. There are also 21K, 10K and 5K races. More than 20,000 runners will enjoy the scenery in the City of Flowers. This year, the event will take place on September 9. Registration for any of the distances is $40 for non-Colombians.
Carrera de la Mujer Colombia
Cali, Medellin and Bogota take turns hosting this competition. The events promote exercise for all women by offering training around the cities for one month. Bogota’s turn to host the 12K, 8K, 4K, and 2K Carrera de la Mujer road races is on September 3.
