Active Peru: Marathon in the Andes
Have you ever run not to reach the finish line but to conquer one of the wonders of the world? If you answered no, this is your chance.
Inca Trail Marathon and Races:
Since 1998, a local tourism agency has organized the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Marathon, which is a strenuous run over mountain terrain that takes you from 8,000 to 13,500 feet to reach the Lost City of the Incas. This is recommended for very experienced runners.
If you aren’t a professional runner, there are two less strenuous alternatives, the Classic Inca Trail In-A-Day 30K (19 miles) and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Running Adventure, in which you run for two days through the famous Inca road. In any of these events you will enjoy archaeological sites only seen in this route and you will reach Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
Last June, a runner from Spain won the race, finishing in 4:56 hours. Runners are getting ready for the next challenge on August 8.
You can choose the event that suits you better but don’t forget to book permits with at least six months in advance. These races are offered twice a year (June and August) so don’t miss this opportunity and sign up now for the adventure of your life.
Lima Marathons:
The capital is also home to some road races you won’t want to miss. Peru Runners, the oldest runners’ organization in the country, organizes a half-marathon which will take place in Lima on August 26. The registration fee is S/60 (US $23) for the 21K and S/50 (US $18) for the 10K race. You can sign up at the Marathon shops in Larcomar and Jockey Plaza malls.
And if you want to be part of the most famous race in the capital, Lima 42K, it will be held on May 2013. To register and for information, visit the race’s official website.
Happy running!
