When travelling, check the information you should know to transport your baggage.

The transport of oversized articles and pets or other animals aboard LAN may be found under this type of baggage.

Oversized Items

Oversized sporting or musical equipment may be considered part of the free checked baggage allowance provided that it does not exceed the permitted allowance (according to the route and flight cabin). If it exceeds it, an excess baggage fee will be charged in accordance with the current policy regarding regular baggage.

Other types of oversized items must be transported via LANCARGO.

In any event, articles allowed must also meet the following requirements:

  • Special items should be packaged accordingly within a piece of luggage (a bag or box specially designed for
  • The volume of the packed piece does not exceed 203 linear cm excepting for surf boards, which can have a maximum volume of 300 linear cm.
  • Each piece does not exceed 23 kilograms in weight. By paying the excess baggage fee corresponding to the route, the maximum weight may go up to 45 kilograms, except on connections with Iberia, British Airways, and Qantas and on flights to/from Europe or Oceania on which the maximum weight is 32 kilograms.
  • Must meet the security conditions required for baggage and does not include prohibited items.
  • Items such as windsurfing boards, kayaks, canoes and paddles, hang gliders, vaulting poles, and javelins may only be transported via LANCARGO.
  • In the case of bicycles traveling in one piece, the handlebars must be fixed sideways and the pedals must be removed; otherwise, they must be wrapped in a material so as to prevent them from damaging other articles.

You must in mind bear the following:

  • As these items are fragile, they must be transported in cases and containers specially designed for their transport.
  • Small instruments may be carried in the cabin, provided that they are going in their case and comply with the requirements established for hand luggage.

NOTE: LAN's liability for damages incurred by these items (sporting or musical) is limited to what is established by law and existing international treaties.

Pets and other animals

You may transport household pets (such as dogs, cats and small ornamental birds) that meet the legal restrictions imposed by the country they are entering and which have the proper documentation. These animals will be kept in the aircraft's hold. Only service animals will be allowed into the cabin and only if the route allows it.

Other species of animals (and unaccompanied pets) will only be transported via LANCARGO.
Pets and other animals

You must bear in mind the following:

  • This service must be requested through our Contact Center or LAN Sales Office at least 48 hours prior to the flight as it requires confirmation.
  • Transport is subject to an excess baggage charge as an extra piece of baggage under the same policies and rules of charges according to weight ranges applied to pieces of normal baggage, except the transport of seeing-eye dogs, service monkeys accompanied by their owners and rescue dogs.   • Animals must be at least eight weeks old.
  • It is the passenger’s responsibility to find out about the requirements and legal and sanitary restrictions both in the destination country, as well as in stopover and connecting countries in the travel itinerary.
