Other Special Needs

Unaccompanied Minors

In order for a child between 5 and 11 years to travel alone, you must request the Unaccompanied Minor (UM) service by calling our Contact Center or any LAN office.  This service entails that the child is in the custody of LAN’s personnel during the entire flight, including stops, and will accompany the child until he or she is handed over to the receiving person in the destination city.

Requesting the service

This service should be requested 24 hours prior to the flight and is valid for all flights operated by LAN and their connections on the same day and at the same airport. They are not accepted on flights with connections that require an overnight layover or on connections operated by other airlines.

The service may be optional or mandatory depending on the age of the minor:

  • Children between the ages of 0 and 4 are ineligible for the Unaccompanied Minor Service.
  • It is mandatory for children between 5 and 11 years of age travelling alone.
  • Between 12 and 14 years, the service is optional.

Unaccompanied minors who have a disability may board as long as they are physically able to participate in an evacuation and can understand and respond to safety instructions. They should also be able to feed themselves and to take care of their personal hygiene needs.

For safety reasons the number of unaccompanied minors travelling alone on one single flight is limited and will depend on the number of seats available on the plane, we therefore suggest you request this service with ample time.

The unaccompanied minor service is not available on LAN.com. Reservations and service for unaccompanied minors may only be requested through our sales office and Contact Center and only paid for at sales offices. The unaccompanied minor service must be confirmed before ticket issuance.

Flight change is subject to regulations that apply to the purchased rate. Therefore, we suggest you request the service first and once it is confirmed, purchase the ticket.

Recommendations

  • For a child to be boarded, the request must be previously confirmed by LAN. Important: Minors for whom the service has not been confirmed will be denied boarding.
  • Arrive at the airport in advance to do the Check- in. The adult responsible for the child must complete the Transport of a Minor Form, which is provided directly at the counter.
  • The adult responsible for the child must remain at the airport until the flight has departed.
  • The adult requesting the service is responsible for checking the legal requirements and documents needed by the departure and arrival countries for the minor to travel.
  • It is suggested that this service is used on direct flights, in order to avoid connections or being in transit.
  • For safety reasons, the unaccompanied minor service is available to healthy, self-sufficient minors. Minors requiring medication during the flight or are not able to cover their basic needs autonomously must travel with an adult.
  • Duly label carry-on baggage and only pack what is indispensable for the trip, avoiding valuable items.

For domestic flights within Chile, Peru and Argentina, a service fee of US$ 15 is charged per flight. For international flights, the fee is US$ 75 per flight.
