Located at the top of a mountain, the beauty of Machu Picchu (which in Quechua means “Old Mountain”), set in lush natural surroundings, is impressive.

The fortress – which estimates say was built in the fifteenth century by the Incan emperor, Pachacutec – has enormous walls, passages and temples. It’s divided into two areas – the agricultural sector (with staggered terraces) and the urban sector (with terraced roads and a sophisticated water system).
