Destination guide: Ushuaia
About Ushuaia
The Argentine city of Ushuaia is hailed as the world's southernmost city, a curiosity that makes it one of the country's main attractions. Ushuaia is capital of the province, acting as a hub for industrial, tourist, administrative and port activities in Tierra del Fuego province, Argentine Antarctica and the Islands of the South Atlantic.
When the city was founded on October 12, 1884, it was called Oshovia which means "bay at the western end" in local yagán dialect. Its privileged location offers a bounty of forests, mountains, lakes and rivers where visitors can indulge in skiing and overland expeditions. Even cruise ships can weigh anchor in Ushuaia's bay.
