Destination guide: Salta

About Salta

Located in the Lerma Valley, Salta is one of the most important cities in north-eastern Argentina, although one thing in particular has catapulted it to fame - the Cloud Train, a train which sets out from the city and which gets its name because it travels 4,200 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest-reaching train journeys in the world.

Because of its location, Salta has become the center for communication with the neighboring countries of Bolivia and Chile, while its agriculture and cattle breeding allow the province to export its products to Europe, California and other Pacific markets.

Although Spanish is the official language of both the country and the province, east of Salta there are more than 50,000 indigenous people who still use ancestral languages such as wichi and chiriguano, while nearly 15,000 use another five indigenous languages.
