Many holidaymakers visiting Lima will choose to take an organized tour due to the city's sheer size. However, if you're hoping to explore Lima on your own, rest assured you'll find a wealth of spectacular and easy-to-access sights, activities and experiences waiting for you.

Having once been the seat of Spanish rule, Lima is home to a great many churches, monasteries and cloisters. Lima also features fascinating pre-Hispanic and colonial architecture, as well as a host of museums that explore the various civilizations from Lima's past. Additionally, visitors can see various archaeological sites within and around Lima, the largest being Pachacamac (located 10 km south of Lima).

One aspect of Lima you won't want to rush through is its culinary offering. ART MUSEUM
This museum in Lima features both permanent and temporary exhibits of Peruvian art, spanning pre-Hispanic, colonial, republican and modern styles.
SAN CRISTOBAL HILL
Located close to the Rimac river, at about 500m above sea level, this hill in Lima offers visitors stunning views. There's also a restaurant and a museum at the top.
SAN FRANCISCO CHURCH
This renowned church in downtown Lima features colonial architecture and underground catacombs, which hold skeletons arranged in artistic designs. Visitors can also see the church's beautiful library with it's stunning spiral staircase.
PALOMINO ISLANDS
Situated near the port of Lima, these islands are inhabited by colonies of sea lions and Peruvian boobies.
LUIS MIRO QUESADA GARLAND HALL
Commonly known as the Galeria de la Municipalidad de Miraflores (Miraflores Municipal Gallery), this attraction is one of Lima's most popular art galleries. The work exhibited is mainly by local artists, though some foreign work is also displayed.
