The Atacama Desert is located on Chile’s Pacific coast. The area has a stable climate all-year-round and at times it can transport you to other worlds, with its unique landscapes and wild natural surroundings. It is a place full of contrasts where your camera will come in very useful indeed.
The Atacama Desert’s unmissable attractions include high plateau lagoons and the El Tatio Geysers. If you visit the geysers, it is worth getting up extremely early in order to see a spot that almost looks like somewhere from outer space. The Valley of the Moon is also a great place to visit and you will feel as though you are walking on the surface of our famous planet. If you go in September and November, you cannot afford to miss out on the flowering desert, which has more than 200 species of flowers that cover a large portion of the desert.
San Pedro de Atacama sits among the area’s immense landscapes, it is a perfect place to spend a few days and set up a base camp from where you can head out on excursions. If you like archaeology then you have come to the right place, as San Pedro is known as the archaeological capital of Chile. To reach the town, you can first fly from Santiago de Chile to Calama and then make your way to San Pedro.
If you are an adventurous type looking for thrills, you can climb one of the volcanoes or mountains located in the area that have peaks of over 5,500 metres, discover the desert with a camel trek or go sandboarding in dunes that are up 120 metres high.
However, there is no doubt that the outstanding feature of the Atacama Desert is the fact that is one of the best places on Earth to stargaze. The Cerro Paranal and the ALMA Project are some of the most important observatories. We have all seen photographs of Saturn, but viewing it directly through a telescope is an unforgettable experience.
