Santa Marta, a paradise with crystal clear waters
The city of Santa Marta is found right in the middle of the Colombian Caribbean, it is the one of the oldest settlements in all of South America, and a place where you can simultaneously enjoy beaches and stunning snowy mountains.
Santa Marta has a magnificent tropical climate, averaging 27ºC over the year, which is ideal for visiting some of its paradisiacal beaches such as Playa Cristal or Playa Grande, one of the most popular due to the colour and warmth of its water. For those who enjoy seeking out hidden and peaceful spots, Playa Granate or the small and picturesque fishing town of Taganga, are the ideal places to relax. Bahía Concha is another privileged spot where you can enjoy magnificent views of the sea and mountain.
The Lost City, built around 700 DC, was the birthplace of the Tayrona Civilization, an indigenous group that lived in the area, and it is a top class archaeological site. In the city you can visit the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Marta, where the remains of Simón Bolívar are held. He spent his last days in Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, which is currently a production centre for rum, panela (whole cane sugar) and honey. You can also visit Customs House, home to the Tayrona Gold Museum, or marvel at the architecture of plazas and parks such at the Bolívar or the Lovers’ Park.
In Santa María, you will be able to enjoy the area’s delicious gastronomy, such as the delicious seafood soup with lemon, the popular egg-filled arepa, coconut rice, and the traditional carimañolas (type of typical Colombian pie filled with meat or chicken) made with cassava. To sweeten things up a little, there is nothing better than trying the yam dessert.
