• The Inca Trail

The Inca trail, in Peru, is the most well-known walking route for travellers that is taken to reach Machu Picchu, one of the most important archaeological sites in South America, and without doubt, the most representative of the ancient Inca Empire.

There are two possible options: the two day or four day Inca trail. The first is a guided tour with different stops and it consists of an ascent to Wiñay Wayna, before travelling for two more hours and sleeping in Aguas Calientes. The four day alternative leaves from Cuzco and passes through Santa Teresa, with various hours spent in the rainforest.

One of the most outstanding attractions on the route is the ancient network of Inca settlements, with sites such as Wiñay Wayna and Phuyupatamarca. Built in the middle of beautiful landscapes, these places are home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife. The route and activities carried out vary depending on the time of the year when you visit, and it is possible to travel some sections of the route by bike, or even in a raft.

There are excursion groups throughout the year, except during February, when the route closes for maintenance. The climate is always mild, and May and October are good times to visit. From September onwards, there are fewer crowds of visitors. It is important to book beforehand, as excursions must be undertaken with an authorised operator. The best way to get there is by flying to Cuzco and starting the 4 day path from there or by going halfway to Aguas Calientes in order to start the 2 day route.

Now all that remains for you to do is enjoy this unforgettable experience that everyone should have at least once in their life.
