  • Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is located on the western shore of Rio de la Plata, in the Pampa Plains region. The city centre itself has a population of more than two million inhabitants and if you include the surrounding metropolitan area, it has a total population of fourteen million people. This makes it the country’s largest city and one of the 20 biggest cities in the world.

The Argentine capital has a very well defined layout, a factor that has led to it being recognised as the best designed city. It is also worth highlighting that it and Mexico City are the South American cities with the most skyscrapers. This demonstrates the city’s importance in terms of development, not just for the country but for the entire continent. In turn, it is one of the most popular cities for tourism in the entire continent. This means that many airlines including LAN provide the public with London to Buenos Aires flights, making it a favourite destination among travellers.

La Casa Rosada, which means Pink House in English is the current house of government and is located in front of the Plaza de Mayo. The house’s name comes from the colour it is painted. According to legend, the colour origins were the result of mixing paint with cattle blood which led to the dark pink colour. Given how striking the colour was, it was decided that the facade should remain like that until now, and this has led to it becoming a site of interest for visitors to the capital.

Plaza de Mayo, is the epicentre for all of the protests that have taken place in the capital, shaping the history and path that Argentina has taken. The square’s origins date back to the revolution that started on 25 May, leading to the South American country winning independence from the Spanish empire that had held an iron grip over it during the conquest years. From the plaza you can see some of the city’s most historic buildings such as: La Casa Rosada, the Buenos Aires Cabildo, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Bank of the Argentine Nation.

La Boca is one of the most popular neighbourhoods in the capital. Its multicolour houses make this area a place where street art rules every corner. Caminito is a street within the area, and it is very well-known thanks to a song written by Juan de Dios Filiberto that became very famous and significant within the Argentine tango tradition.

Recoleta, is one of the most important areas in terms of its architectural legacy, and home to Argentina’s high society. It contains some of the most incredible Spanish and French-style period buildings. The area also stands out for its important historical monuments and cultural centres such as the National Museum of Fine Arts and the National Library, one of the most important institutions of its kind in the entire country.

Recoleta Cemetery has gradually become a site of interest for tourism over the years due to the fact that great Argentine historical figures are buried there, such as Eva Duarte and the Nobel Prize winners Luis Federico Leloir and Carlos Saavedra Lamas.

The Boca Juniors Stadium (La Bombonera): For football lovers, this place is a temple and an essential stopping point if you come to Buenos Aires. This impressive stadium belongs to Boca Junior, one of the most decorated sides in Argentina. This stadium has hosted some of the most important games in the Argentine league, bringing thousands of people together under the same motto WE ARE THE HALF PLUS ONE (SOMOS LA MITAD MÁS UNO), which refers to their number of fans.
