Punta Arenas

About Punta Arenas

As the most populated town in the Magellan region, Punta Arenas still bears traces of its important early colonization by europeans, with germans, croats, spaniards, french, english, italians and swiss arriving in the mid-nineteenth century, as well as chileans from Los Lagos and Biobio regions. The presence of all of these nationalities is seen both in the population itself and in the town's many shops and buildings.

The town's name, literally meaning "Sandy Point", was given to it due to its topography by the british seafarer, John Byron, in the seventeenth century. Nowadays, the town the most important business, cultural, social and tourist center in the Magellan region.
