At the Miami International Airport:
LAN CARGO INAUGURATES LARGEST AIRLINE COLD STORAGE FACILITY IN THE UNITED STATES
Miami, April 20, 2010.
Today, LAN CARGO inaugurated its new cold storage facility at the Miami International Airport, the largest airline operated facility of its kind at an airport in the United States.
The Company invested US$4 million in the expansion of the current facility, which included a significant focus on technology. This investment doubles the airlines’ capacity to process perishable goods, which are the main export products from Latin America to the United States and to Europe and Asia via Miami International Airport.
The new facility forms part of the over 430,000 square feet that LAN CARGO has at the Miami International Airport including export and import terminals, cold storage facilities, warehouses and offices.
"We continue to invest in the technology that allows us to provide the most efficient product for the development of the export industry in the region. In doing so, the Company strengthens its leadership in the transportation of cargo between Latin America and the United States, and, more specifically, at the Miami International Airport, which is the main gateway to the North America market", said Cristián Ureta, CEO of LAN CARGO.
The existing cold storage facilities were expanded by 32,000 square feet and have temperature control systems that maintain specific conditions to preserve perishable goods. This is a crucial aspect in the treatment and care of products like flowers coming from Ecuador and Colombia, asparagus from Peru, salmon from Chile and blueberries from Argentina, amongst others.
The warehouses also include equipment with the latest technology for the automated handling of pallets; this ensures maximum care of the cargo and preservation of the cold chain. LAN CARGO’s facilities in Miami meets the highest standards of environmental protection.
“The recovery of the global economy has caused a significant increase in cargo traffic because of the larger demand for the air transportation of products and goods throughout the world. Latin America leads this growth, and we have made significant investments to support the development of the import and export activities in the region while offering world class service", added Ureta.
LAN CARGO and its affiliates offer the broadest network of coverage in the region. From Miami International Airport they operate over 115 weekly flights to the principal cities in Central and South America, in addition to destinations in Mexico and Europe. Over 895 employees work at the LAN Airlines and LAN CARGO facilities located in Miami-Dade County.
In addition, LAN CARGO operates a fleet of state-of-the-art aircraft. Last year, the Company acquired the new Boeing 777F, becoming the only airline in the region, and one of the first airlines in the world, to operate this aircraft, which is the most modern and efficient cargo plane in the world in its category. This aircraft has allowed LAN CARGO to expand further its network of destinations between Latin America and Europe.
The new Boeing 777F is designed with the latest technology to allow a more environmentally friendly operation, helping to reduce the impact of global warming. This aircraft provides for the reduction of CO2 emissions by approximately 30% per each transported ton, with respect to the average standard of the air cargo industry fleet. It also incorporates features that will remarkably reduce noise levels consistent with all regulatory standards.
The Company has continued to expand its services in the region. Last year, LAN CARGO's affiliate in Colombia - Línea Aérea Carguera de Colombia S.A- started operating in that country, servicing the Bogotá-Miami route, as well as flights throughout South America and Europe. Colombia is the largest air cargo market in Latin America with respect to exports to the United States, with an estimated annual volume of 200,000 tons.
In March, 2009, LAN CARGO's affiliate in Brazil, ABSA - Aerolinhas Brasileiras S.A – initiated operations in the Brazilian domestic market, servicing the cities of Sao Paulo and Manaos. ABSA also launched their flights connecting Miami and Maringá, in the southern region of Brazil.
