Security Checks - Trips to/from/through the European Union

New security regulations for traveling within the European Union

Beginning November 2006, a new regulation from the European Comission comes into effect, with the aim of improving security on flights within the European Union by regulating the transport of liquids in carry-on luggage. As of this month, passengers are permitted to carry containers of no more than 100 ml, inside a plastic bag of no more than a liter that can be sealed. The bag must be presented separately during security checks of carry-on luggage.

This new regulation is in effect in all airports in the EU, as well as in Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland, regardless of the flight's destination. The regulation only applies to carry-on luggage. All liquids transported in checked luggage will not be subject to this security measure.

The liquids to which this new regulation applies are:

  • Water
  • Beverages
  • Soups
  • Syrups
  • Creams
  • Lotions
  • Oils
  • Perfumes
  • Sprays
  • Gels
  • Deodorants
  • Shaving creams
  • Toothpastes
  • Eye makeup
  • Solid-liquid mixtures

The new regulation does not apply to medication and products needed for special dietetic reasons (including food for infants) that must be used during the flight. Passengers can continue to carry such items in their carry-on luggage.

In addition, passengers are allowed to board with liquids (such as beverages and perfumes) purchased past the boarding pass checkpoint. These liquids are considered apart from the quantities one may carry in a sealed plastic bag. In the case of transit between airports, these purchases must be placed inside a sealed bag containing the proof of purchase, and must remain closed until the final destination is reached.

Carry-on luggage will be inspected at security checkpoints, and security personnel will also check the permitted liquids. In addition, coats, laptops and electronics will be inspected separately.
