The prestigious English magazine Airline Business honors:

Airline Business, an English magazine specialized in the aviation industry, bestowed LAN's Chief Executive Officer, Enrique Cueto, with the 2009 "Executive Leadership" award. This honor is given to the Chief Executive Officer of airlines who have demonstrated exceptional strategic vision and leadership during the past year. The Airline Strategy Awards were created in 2002 and encompass 8 categories. These awards are widely recognized as the most prestigious in the international airline industry.
This distinction recognizes accomplishments in the areas of leadership, strength of business units, success in expanding and restructuring of a business, the establishment of a clear corporate vision as well as the implementation and development of an innovative management strategy.
The awards ceremony recently took place in London . The highest ranking representatives of the world's aviation industry were in attendance. During the event Mark Pilling, Editor of Airline Business , stated that a strong, bold and visionary leadership is essential during these tough times. "The Airline Strategy Awards recognize the best in boardroom leadership in this industry".
Upon receiving this distinguished award, Enrique Cueto expressed his gratitude: "On behalf of LAN's executive management team whom I've had the privilege of working with for over 15 years and the 16,000 employees that make LAN what it is today, it is a great honor to receive this recognition. Service, security and efficiency in addition to a first class rated employee, are the pillars to our sustained growth and positive long term financial results".
This is the first time in the history of these awards that an executive from a Latin American airline receives this distinction. In the past, this award has gone to the CEO's of other important international airlines like American Airlines, Qantas, British Airways, Iberia , Lufthansa and Air France-KLM, among others.
Enrique Cueto emphasized the significance of this award for the region's aviation industry, an industry that has undergone significant changes after having incorporated new business models that have led to greater efficiency, state-of-the-art fleets, positive financial results, which have resulted in the advancement of Latin America's commercial aviation.
Mark Pilling, the editor, added that these changes strikingly confirm that the level of leadership reached by the region's aviation industry over the course of the past few years is remarkable. He continued by highlighting that the two most influential aviation industry leaders received the most important awards. He was referring to the other Airline Business Award given to Copa Airlines and received by Pedro Heilbron, the company's Chief Executive Officer.
This year LAN is celebrating 80 years of service. The company was founded in 1929 and has become Latin America's leading airline for passenger and cargo transportation, with affiliates in Chile, Peru, Argentina and Ecuador .
